About
About Portus – Imperial Harbour of Rome
Rome's colossal double artificial harbour system built successively by Claudius (42–64 CE, 250 ha outer basin) and Trajan (100–112 CE, hexagonal inner basin Lago Traiano, 39 ha) 3 km north of Ostia at Tiber mouth, linked to Rome via Via Portuensis and Canale di Imbocco. Now 2 km inland due to 2,000 years of Tiber alluviation, its moles, quays, navalia, warehouses (horrea), and Isola Sacra necropolis survive partly waterlogged/subsided. Central to annona grain supply; capable of berthing hundreds of merchantmen.
Why it mattersLargest and best-preserved Roman harbour complex; UNESCO Tentative List; laboratory for Roman maritime concrete and logistics.

Mysteries & theories
Mysteries
- 01Function of massive Palazzo Imperiale (imperial palace vs admin?)
- 02How hydraulic concrete set underwater for moles
Theories
- 01Portus–Ostia integrated port-system model (Salomon 2016) linking canal hydrology to basin dredging
Theories are interpretations, not findings. The seal above tells you how much scholarly weight the place carries.
