About
About Qanat of Ghasemabad
High-discharge qanat feeding Ghasemabad bagh and Yazd western fields: 14-km gallery with 320 shafts tapping the Shir Kuh alluvial fan, dated by archival waqf document 1226 CE and OSL on spoil 1180 CE but underlying Sassanian pottery suggests 6th c. CE origin with Islamic refurbishment. 19 m3/s (190 L/s) outflow is the second highest in Yazd province after Zarch, and feeds both the Ghasemabad chahar bagh and 12 downstream mill houses (asiabs) via 8-km open channel.
Unlike Zarch's 71-km length, Ghasemabad is short-high-gradient (1:800) achieving 30-m hydraulic head over 14 km. The qanat's water is 14 C year-round, irrigating the famed Yazd pomegranate and henna fields. UNESCO Persian Qanat WH 1506 buffer includes Ghasemabad as satellite to Zarch.
Why it mattersHigh-discharge short-gradient qanat proving Yazd hydraulic diversification beyond single Zarch mega-qanat; 190 L/s hydraulic head powers 12 mills.
