About

About Qohaito — Ancient Highland Town

Qohaito (Koloe) is a 750 ha pre-Aksumite to Aksumite highland city on the Eritrean plateau edge at 2595 m, flourishing 500 BCE–600 CE as D'mt precursor to Aksum. Unploughed ruins include Temple of Mariam Wakino (Sabean-style columns), 2.5 km dam-like stone wall, rock-cut tombs, and Sahhaw Rock Art shelters. Periplus of the Erythraean Sea identifies it as Koloe; Adulis port lies 60 km east via Komaile descent. Little excavation (2010s Eritrean-German survey) leaves most of 30+ structures unmapped, with six standing monolithic stelae and field systems visible under lichen.

Why it mattersLargest unexcavated pre-Aksumite city in Eritrea; Koloe identification links Periplus trade geography to highland polity.
