About Seal Township Earthworks
Secluded Hopewell hilltop enclosure system on Scioto River bluff: three joined geometric works (circle 120 m, square 140 m, irregular) with small conical mounds, overlooking Seal Township floodplain. Outlier 45 km south of Chillicothe core, demonstrates Hopewell extension down Scioto, with copper ear spools and Flint Ridge bifaces. Intact forested enclosure now Pike State Forest.
Why it mattersSouthernmost well-preserved Hilltop Hopewell enclosure, tests riverine expansion model.
