About
About Seila Pyramid
Northernmost provincial pyramid group candidate, at southeastern edge of Fayum depression on Gebel el-Rus ridge, 11 km west of Meidum and almost same latitude. Unique: four limestone steps, 25 m base, 6.8 m high, oriented 12° to Nile, built of local Faiyum limestone with tafla mortar. Excavated 1898 Ludwig Borchardt (found offering table of Sneferu with decree), re-excavated 1980s BYU Fayum survey (Muhlestein). Most complete small pyramid with intact causeway traces east.
Why it mattersOnly provincial pyramid with associated royal altar and decree; links Huni network to Sneferu's Faiyum hydraulic works (Lahun dam); transition to true pyramid ideology.
