Neo-Assyrian king Sennacherib's 80-km Greater Khosr Canal (c.690 BCE) bringing mountain water to flood-irrigate Nineveh's orchards and supply its 15-km city wall moat, integrating 18 tunnels and the 300-m-long Jerwan aqueduct—the world's oldest surviving true arch-bridge aqueduct with 2 million limestone blocks, five pointed arches spanning the Gomel River on ashlar piers waterproofed with bitumen. Inscribed 'Sennacherib, king of the universe' gateway prisms at Jerwan describe corvée 10,000 men and qanat-style tunnelling aligning with later Persian technology. Aqueduct survived until 2023 satellite monitoring confirms 100-m remnant bridging gorge.
Why it mattersEarliest arch-aqueduct antecedent to Roman technology by 600 years; proves Assyrian hydraulic scale capable of supporting Nineveh's 100,000+ inhabitants and theorized prototype for 'Hanging Gardens' hydraulic irrigation.
