About
About Shabwa – Hadramawt Incense Harbour, Yemen
Shabwa, capital of Hadramawt and terminus of Wadi Hadramawt incense road, controlled a wadi-river harbour now silted 100 m from modern wadi with 3rd c. BCE–4th c. CE stone warehouse walls and rock-cut cistern canal linking to Royal Palace Al-Hajar. Breton–Darles (1975–2005) mapped harbour causeway 200 m with irrigation dam at 15.368°N 47.022°E silted under wadi gravel, and warehouse quarter with frankincense jar caches sealed 4th c. CE Himyarite sack. Harbour relied on monsoon-flood channel that after Himyar dam break silted 2 m, stranding warehouses. Harbour stratigraphy anchors incense road and Wadi silt.
Why it mattersOnly Hadramawt incense harbour with intact causeway; dam stratigraphy anchors South Arabian incense chronology.
