About
About Shechem (Tell Balata) – Canaanite Harbour of the Pass of Shechem
Shechem (Tell Balata/Sichem) – Canaanite amphictyony capital in the strategic pass between Mount Gerizim and Ebal, whose 'harbour' was a mountain caravanserai port for Jaffa–Shechem–Jordan Valley caravan road (Way of the Patriarchs). Its valley gate and caravan quay (caravanserai) platform (40×20 m) handled Jaffa cedar and Shechem olive oil caravans before Israelite–Assyrian destruction 722 BCE. Sellin–Wright excavations uncovered the 'Temple of Baal-berith' (fortress temple), Middle Bronze cyclopean walls (3.5 m) and the eastern pass harbour gate with caravan loading ramps. The pass canal (Wadi Shechem) silted.
Why it mattersOnly Levantine mountain pass caravan port preserving intact MB cyclopean walls and Baal-berith fortress temple harbour-stratigraphy.
