About

About Sinai Nawamis Road (Route of the Nawamis — Serabit to Ain Huderah)

Sinai's 25-km 'Road of the Nawamis': 120 beehive nawamis (circular stone chambers 3–6 m diam, corbel vault 2.5 m high) spaced 80–150 m along a chalk hamada ridge from Wadi Watir mouth to Serabit turquoise mines, with 15 elongated 'mustatil-like' platforms 30–60 m that Parr equated to Saudi mustatils. Beit-Arieh 1970s–80s cataloged this as Late Chalcolithic–Early Bronze I (3800–3200 BCE) Trans-Sinai copper road marking, with nawamis as roadside burial for desert caravans, containing Tumilat sickles and copper awls. Platforms contain caprid crania like Khaybar mustatils, indicating shared Sinai–Harrat ritual way at least 1,300 km long. Egyptian antiquities 'Nawamis Road' protected.

Why it mattersLongest preserved Copper Age roadside burial line in the Near East; links Sinai to Arabian mustatils.
