Fortified Bronze Age proto-town (c.2100–1800 BCE, Sintashta culture, late Middle Bronze) — type-site for Sintashta–Petrovka–Arkaim 'Country of Towns' (20 fortified settlements). Gennadi Zdanovich excavations 1972– revealed: circular bastioned town 140 m diameter with ditch and rampart 5.5 m, 2 rings of 30–40 houses, earliest spoke-wheeled chariots burials 12 mounds (Sintashta SM cemetery with chariots, horse sacrifices, weapons). Origins of Indo-Iranian chariot warfare and Ural metallurgy (copper slag, arsenic bronze).
Why it mattersEarliest chariots worldwide (spoke wheels 2050 BCE); Indo-Iranian homeland candidate; metallurgy proto-town.
