About Songo Mnara — Swahili Stone Town

Songo Mnara is the 15th-century Swahili stone town on Songo Mnara Island (Lindi) 10 km S of Kilwa Kisiwani, inhabited 14th–16th c then abandoned. Inscribed 1981 together with Kilwa (UNESCO 144, danger-listed 2006 for erosion). Town encloses 6 ha walled complex with coral-limestone palace, 3 mosques (Central Mosque 12×15 m with mihrab), 40+ stone houses with coral rag and lime mortar, and 15th c cemetery. Exports gold, ivory via Kilwa sultanate. Aarhus–York archaeology shows planned grid and imported Chinese blue-white pottery.
