About
About SunWatch Indian Village
Reconstructed Fort Ancient circular village (3 acres) on Great Miami River terrace at Dayton: central plaza 42 m diameter ringed by post-mold houses, stockade with bastions, and reconstructed cedar poles marking Woodhenge-like solar alignment. Original village occupied 1150–1450 CE; excavations 1971–88 revealed 70+ structures, maize agriculture, shell temper pottery, and solstice-oriented entry. Now SunWatch National Historic Landmark park.
Why it mattersPremier reconstructed Fort Ancient village demonstrating Mississippian influence north of Ohio River and solar-calibrated planning without mounds.
