About
About Sutkagen Dor
Sutkagen Dor is the westernmost Harappan site (2600–1900 BCE), a 17.5-ha walled port on the Dasht plateau near the Makran coast, with stone–mudbrick citadel (12 m walls, 5-m-thick) and lower town on the Dasht River estuary. Surveyed by Stein (1927) and Dales (1962), its fortified enclosure (150×150 m citadel) with bastions overlooked the Arabian Sea 5 km south, controllinglapis–shell trade from Shortugai to the Gulf. At 30 m Makran terrace, shell middens and Harappan cubical weights (13.5 g) prove coastal exchange; no irrigation works indicate maritime rainfed economy.
Why it mattersWestern anchor of Harappan world proving 700-km coastal trade network to Shortugai; smallest major Harappan walled town.
