About Tell Mozan (Urkesh)

Hurrian capital Urkesh (c.3000–1350 BCE) attributed to the god Kumarbi, with monumental Royal Palace of Tupkish (c.2250 BCE) and underground stone Abi (nekromanteion — pit to summon underworld spirits) — Hurrian holy city preceding Hittites. Tell Mozan 135 ha, high tell with city wall, temple terrace. UCLA-Buccellati excavations since 1984 produced Hurrian cuneiform sealings of King Tupkish and Queen Uqnitum, earliest Hurrian. Mitanni layer overlies Akkadian.
