Hilltop stone-walled citadel in northern Kruger National Park on Levubu River watershed, Thulamela is 5 ha Mapungubwe-descendant kingdom 1250–1700 CE excavated 1993 post-apartheid with sensitivity: two graves revealed gold jewellery (including bracelets), iron gongs, Chinese porcelain, glass beads – one queen 'Queen of Thulamela' with gold bangles still on ankles. Comparable architecture to Great Zimbabwe–Khami tradition (dry-stone terraces). Controlled Limpopo–Indian Ocean trade (ivory to Kilwa). Sotho-Tsonga associated. Now Kruger guided archaeology trail; revealed living heritage for Venda people. Identity mirrors Mapungubwe.
Why it mattersBridges Mapungubwe (1220) to Great Zimbabwe (1300) to coastal chain; tangible reconciliation heritage for Venda claim after park displacement.
