Largest shell mound in mainland United States—St. Johns II / late prehistoric (600–1400 CE) oyster-shell midden-mound 30 ft high (≈15 m) extending 600 ft long × 180 ft wide (≈183×55 m), volume ~35,000 cu ft of mostly oyster and coquina shells piled by Surruque / Ais chiefdoms as ceremonial landmark and navigational aid (French and Spanish charts since 1562 show 'Roche Mound'). Ripley P. Bullen test-pitted structure showing layered shell and sand cap with temple on summit. Visible across Mosquito Lagoon; below modern sea level base is buried mangrove peat, confirming sea-level history.
Why it mattersTallest shell mound in North America; classic teaching site for coastal forager monumentality and paleo-sea-level marker; early European navigation landmark.
