About Ulu Kurgan (Bolshoy Kurgan) — Bashkir Steppe Sarmatian Royal Mound (Bashkortostan)
Largest Bashkir steppe Sarmatian elite mound (5 m high, 42 m diam) on the Sakmara divide, Sterlibashevo district. Ufa Centre RAS 1998–2006 excavated a 3-m deep shaft-catacomb with a Sarmatian chieftain with scale-armoured horse, 60 cm iron akinakes, 400 gold appliqués and Parthian faience vessel, dated 1st c BCE–1st c CE via fibula seriation and 14C: 30 BCE–60 CE. Surrounded by 8 satellite mounds with diagonal flexed burials and 'crooked ram' sheep offering — unique Bashkir Sarmatian rite transitional between Prokhorovka and Alan. Shows late Sarmatian militarization before Alan migration to Ciscaucasia.
