About
About Vikramashila Mahavihara
Vikramashila (c.770–1200 CE) was one of the three great universities of Pala India (with Nalanda and Odantapuri), founded by Dharmapala on a hillock above the Ganga at Antichak. The quadrangular monastery (330×330 m, 208 cells) centers on a cruciform temple (80×80 m plinth) with terracotta plaques, stucco, and a 3-m-high seated Buddha colossus. Seven phases of Pala brick architecture, Tibetan texts (Atisha taught here) and excavations (ASI 1960–69 Sinha, 1970–82 Verma) reveal a library, votive stupa courts, and a gateway facing the Ganga. Sacked 1193 by Bakhtiyar Khalji, its tiles and bronzes fill Patna Museum. At 40 m elevation it commanded the Ganga–Anga trade artery.
Why it mattersOne of three great Pala universities; source of Tibetan Buddhism (Atisha); largest Pala monastic quadrangle.
