About

About Wiracochapampa – Northern Wari Fortress

Northernmost major Wari provincial center (600–700 CE, abortive) on Cajabamba road 10 km N of Huamachuco at 3100 m: orthogonal Wari cellular town plan 400×500 m with D-shaped temple, plaza, barracks and kancha patios copying Wari capital Pikillacta but never finished—walls stop mid-course, no roofs, rapid abandonment leaving construction fill. Schaedel/Topic Isbell argue colony failed due to local resistance plus distance from Ayacucho. Pre-Inca largest highland imperial enclosure in north Sierra; Collier lithic quarry nearby.

Why it mattersEvidence for Wari imperial overextension and rapid collapse of northern frontier (abortive construction frozen), key to Wari collapse model and pre-Inca state fragility.
