About Yungang Western Cliffs — Datong Grottoes West End Caves
Westernmost 5 caves (40–45) of Yungang 53-cave complex at Wuzhou Mountain south foot, 16 km west of Datong (Northern Wei capital Pingcheng), carved 460–525 CE in sandstone with 51,000 statues. Caves 19–20 contain Tanyao Five Buddhas 15 m high epitomizing Wei syncretism; western caves smaller intimate meditation cells contrasting the eastern imperial scale.
