About Zhetytobe Kurgan Necropolis (Turkestan Ridge – Ancient Asativ)
Ridge necropolis (520 m) at Zhetytobe ('Seven Hills') 12 km south of Sozak town, Turkestan Region, Kazakh desert steppe between Karatau ridge and Betpak-Dala. Seven prominent hillock kurgans 42-72 m diam 6-11 m high on natural loess hills enhanced with artificial fill, plus 14 smaller satellites—total 21 mounds ca. 600-300 BCE Early Saka (archer) phase. Kurgan 3 (excavated 1976): central larch chamber with 3-tiered log roof, bronze mirror + 94 gold overlays (coiled felines) + iron sax with turquoise inlay.
Ridge overlooks Sozak oasis of the Chu–Syr darya watershed, controlling Syr Darya caravan to Otrar (Farab). Medieval Asativ settlement overlays southern mounds (ceramic). Local legend of 'Seven saints hills'. Threatened by Sozak tin-tungsten mining access roads.
