About
About Apollonia of Illyria (Pojan) – Submerged Aous Harbour on Vjosë
Apollonia Illyria (Pojan) – Corinthian–Corcyrean foundation (588 BCE), Aristotlean democracy, Caesar's Octavian school city, and river harbour on the Aous (Vjosë) 7 km from sea. The harbour quay (40 m limestone ashlar) on the Aous palaeochannel now lies 1 m submerged/plain-buried after Vjosë delta progradation 7 km seaward since antiquity. Franco-Albanian cores revealed harbour mud, 5th c. BCE Greek pottery and wooden quay pilings at +0.5 to –1 m in the Pojan swamp. The harbour basin (80×40 m) was connected to the Vjosë via a dredged canal visible on SPOT imagery.
Why it mattersOnly Illyrian river harbour preserving Vjosë palaeochannel harbour morphology; documents 7 km delta progradation and inland harbour canal engineering.
