About

About Band-e Gargar Canal & Dam (Shushtar Darian Canal Head)

Sasanian diversion dam–canal (68 m asl) on the Karun River 2 km east of Shushtar citadel, Khuzestan, Iran—first head of the Daryun (Darian) canal and second element of Shushtar UNESCO system (1315) besides the Roman-built Kaisar. Band-e Gargar is 210-m mortared rubble dam 5 m high with 9 rock-cut regulation slots feeding the Handmade Gargar Canal (47 km long, 12 m wide, 5 m deep) that waters the 40,000 ha Mianab plain between Gargar and Shatit anabranches.

W. Kleiss measured Gargar canal gradient 1:3,200 with precision leveling proving Sasanian survey. Built under Shapur I–II (260-379 CE) by same Roman captive workforce as Kaisar? Gargar feeds downstream Mizan weir. Still supplies Shushtar sugar-cane. Threatened by Karun damming Gotvand silting.

Why it mattersSecond head of UNESCO system; splits Karun into Gargar–Shatit anabranches creating artificial Mianab island.
