About Band-e Mizan Dam – Shushtar Hydraulic Node
The upstream diversion weir at the bifurcation of the Karun River into the Gargar (canal) and Shotait (river) branches, cornerstone of the 1,700-year Sasanian–Achaemenid Shushtar Hydraulic System (UNESCO 1315). Band-e Mizan is a 390-m masonry weir 4.6 m high, built of sandstone blocks with lead clamps and sarooj mortar, first Achaemenid (5th c BCE) and rebuilt under Shapur I c.260 CE with Roman prisoner engineers from Band-e Kaisar. The weir precisely splits the Karun 50/50; Gargar then powers the Shushtar mills and Band-e Kaisar. DAI/ICHO restoration 2002–2015 revealed Achaemenid core under Sasanian facing.
