About Bunjikat (Shahristan Bunjikat)
Bunjikat — capital of Ustrushana (5th–9th c CE) 40 km SE Khujand, excavated 1940s–90s Negmatov (Tajik Academy). Bunjikat was Ustrushana's Islamic–Sogdian capital before Penjikent rival, with ark (citadel) 150×100 m, shahristan 500×600 m double walls, Kuhna Qala, palace with wooden columns (walnut), Sogdian murals (demon and goddess), Zoroastrian fire temple and 9th c mosque. Destroyed by Arab Qutayba 722 and rebuilt. Known via Chinese Wu-man kingdom chronicles (7th c). Artifacts including Chinese mirrors, Sogdian ossuaries, and Arabic dirhams.
