About Byblos – Submerged Early Bronze Age Anchorage
Byblos (Gubla/Gebal) – the world's oldest continuously inhabited Phoenician seaport (Neolithic to Crusader) whose Early Bronze anchorage lies submerged 100–250 m offshore at –2 to –5 m. Frost's 1960s–2002 mapping recorded pitted Bronze Age anchor stones, ballast mounds and a low rubble 'mole' of unworked boulders 60 m long, pre-dating Phoenician ashlar tradition and contemporary with 3rd-millennium cedar export to Egypt (Khufu mortuary temple reference to Byblos ships 'kbnt'). Marriner cores in the pocket beach show marine transgression 4000 BP drowned the proto-harbour. Medieval harbour (partially submerged Crusader quay) overlies it.
