About

About Chicanná Structure II Pyramid — Bec Valley

Chicanná (House of Serpent Mouth, Bec Valley, Campeche) Structure II: 4-crown Río Bec pyramid (12 m high) with steep false stair, twin pseudo-temples and central monster-mouth portal (Chenés witz mask) displaying earth monster jaws. Excavated by Jack Eaton (1970), Román Piña Chán and INAH. Part of Chicanná-Xpujil corridor within Calakmul sphere. Mask mosaic with hooked nose denotes rain god Chaak. Stair is non-functional (solid); towers are solid. Demonstrates Río Bec theatrical architecture: pyramids as stage sets not tombs. UNESCO buffer of Calakmul (704).
