About El Meco (Bel'maan) Maya Port

Ancient Beel'maan port city (600–1520 CE, port apex 1200–1520) 8 km north of Cancún on Caribbean beach ridge: 14 structures around plaza dominated by El Castillo 12.5-m-high five-stage pyramid-temple with snake balustrades and columned hall, controlling Isla Mujeres channel canoe traffic and salt-murex shell trade. Late Postclassic East Coast style (talud-tablero variant) with perishable superstructures; associated shrines to goddess Ixchel. INAH restoration 1990s; modern highway cuts eastern edge.

Why it mattersDominant northern Quintana Roo port of the circum-peninsular Postclassic trade circuit; demonstrates East Coast architectural canon distinct from Chichén.
