About
About El Rey (Cancún) Maya Port Town
Postclassic coastal town (1200–1520 CE) directly in Cancún Hotel Zone at km 18 on barrier island between Nichupté Lagoon and Caribbean: ~40 platforms, colonnaded halls and Pyramid Structure 2 (9 m high) lining two sacbe roads 30 m long, serving as port and market for Echab polity. Named for monolith 'El Rey' (king) carved face found in Structure 2. Dual plazas with fireshrine censers; INAH 1970s rescue salvaged burials with Aztec-style obsidian blades evidencing long-distance Central Mexican ties. Adjacent to Hilton/ Iberostar resorts.
Why it mattersOnly Maya site inside modern international resort; exemplifies dispersed Postclassic market-town urbanism vs centralized Classic centers; sacbe preserves intra-site processional road.
