Capital of Garamantes, sub-Saharan Saharan hyper-arid civilization controlling trans-Saharan gold and slave trade 900 BCE–600 CE, Germa (Garama) in Fezzan is 6-ha mound with mudbrick walls 3.5 m thick enclosing palace, 500 foggara (qanat) radiating 4 km, and 250 tombs. Herodotus describes Garamantes as troglodyite charioteers. Excavations 1965 Daniels, 2000s Mattingly: medieval mosque overlays Garamantian citadel, agricultural palm fields irrigated by foggara capturing fossil water. Nearby Zinkekra and Aghram Nadhar shrines. Saharan urbanism without river — irrigation paradox. Foggaras 5 km long with 1000 shafts anticipating Islamic qanat by 600 years.
