About Hippo Regius – Submerged Harbour of Augustine at Annaba

Numidian royal city (12th c. BCE Phoenician) – later Roman capital Numidia, seat of Augustine (354–430 bishop). River-harbour on Seybouse estuary with moles, quays, warehouses, cisterns spanning 60 ha. Coastal strip harbour moles 300 m now –1 to –3 m due to +1 m Roman sea rise and Seybouse delta shift. Excavated Marec 1920s–60s: forum, theatre, Augustine basilica, Ghar el-Afgoun? Harbour moles fragmentary but mapped by maritime survey 2009. Vandal 431 sack but harbour silted thereafter. UNESCO tentative Hippo.
