About Karanis — Southern Lake Harbour Pier at Kom Aushim
5–4 m under Fayum silts and modern field. 2 m wide with wheel ruts (Roman period). 5 m draft for lake barges carrying grain to the Bahr Yusuf Nile branch (Arsinoe–Karanis–Soknopaiou network). Lake regression from 2nd c. CE (Fayum desiccation due to Nile branch silt) stranded the pier 400 m from water by 350 CE, as proven by channel abandonment silts radiocarbon 280–350 CE. The pier's foundation deposit (Ptolemy III coin) dates construction to 245–220 BCE.
