About Karaoba Kurgan Field (West Kazakhstan Sarmatian Steppe)

Salt-dome hill field (120 m) on Karaoba dome 88 km east of Oral (Uralsk), West Kazakhstan Region, Ural–Emba steppe. 23 Sarmatian kurgans 18-42 m diam 1.5-5 m high on dome crest and SE pediment, morphologically stepped (2 terraces) like Sintas despite smaller size. Excavated Kurgan 11 (2015): subterranean catacomb with vaulted chamber, alabaster alabastron + Parthian coin (Gotarzes I 95 BCE) providing terminus + 22 gold appliqué. Dome head is Permian salt diapir causing circular mound arrangement echoing salt rim. Karaoba is westernmost large Sarmatian necropolis before Ural river, crossroads Europe–Central Asia. Threatened by oil roads (Chinarevskoye gas field 14 km north).
