About
About Lindholme Neolithic Trackway & Platform (Hatfield Moors, South Yorkshire)
Britain's earliest corduroy timber trackway and platform (2900–2500 BCE): 45 m of transverse alder-oak corduroy rails 2 m apart on longitudinal pine sleepers, raised over a shallow pool from sand-island Lindholme to a 6 x 3 m oak plank platform interpreted as a ritual 'pool shrine', discovered 2004 by Henry Chapman and preserved in situ beneath Hatfield's flooded workings. In the Humberhead Peatlands NNR, the track is the southern Pennine analog to the Sweet Track but 900 years later, built through open fen carr rather than raised bog.
Pollen shows opening of lime woodland for pasture. Track lies in class-2 decay; Natural England's 2016 'Trackway Through Time' built a 1:1 replica. Scheduled Monument 1443481.
Why it mattersEarliest known corduroy trackway in Britain; informs Sweet Track successor technology.
