About
About Olbia Pontica — Bug Estuary Southern Lower Town Grid
4 m Holocene Liman rise and Bug estuary subsidence. Excavations by the Olbia National Reserve and Institute of Archaeology Kyiv (2017–2023) exposed three courtyard houses (6th–3rd c. 2-m-wide street pitched with amphora sherd paving, continuing 90 m under the Liman. The terrace drowned gradually from the 1st c. BCE, sealing Classical horizons under lagoonal clay and preserving organic remains (grape pips, fish bones). The suburb appears to be an artisan fishing quarter servicing the main harbour 400 m north, as evidenced by net weights, lead-sheating and cetaria plaster.
Why it mattersOnly preserved Olbian artisan suburb with waterlogged organics; proves Olbia extended 500 m further south than classical maps; Liman sea-level datum.
