About Pantikapaion — Central Lower Terrace Submerged Quay
5–4 m underwater. Excavations by the Kerch Archaeological Museum and Bosporus Expedition (2015–2022) revealed an ashlar quay 45 m long with mooring bollards, behind which a paved street and two courtyard houses (6th–4th c. BCE) continue under the bay. 1 m since Hellenistic times (relative sea-level + tectonic), drowning the Classical harbour front while the acropolis above remained. Stratigraphy shows a violent destruction layer (c. 63 BCE earthquake linked to Mithridates VI) sealed by marine sand.
Finds include imported Attic black-figure, amphora stamps (Sinope, Thasos) and Bosporan coin hoards, confirming the quay as the royal port before Panticapaeum's eclipse by Phanagoria.
Why it mattersOnly stratified Bosporan royal harbour terrace with in-situ Classical houses under water; anchors Bosporan sea-level and seismic chronology.
