About Pantikapaion — South Mole Harbour Extension
Southern breakwater extension of Pantikapaion's harbour system, a 90-m-long rubble mole at 3.5–5 m depth protecting the southeastern anchorage where Kerch Strait currents meet the bay. Side-scan sonar (2020 Crimean Federal University) and diver verification show a double-faced rubble mound with clay core, built over a submerged Early Bronze Age land surface (palaeosol radiocarbon c.2500 BCE). The mole aligns with the central quay 280 m north, forming a 150-m-wide protected basin for the Bosporan fleet ( appian reports 200 triremes). Medieval Genoese charts still show the mole as a reef ('Scoglio di Kerch'). Its abandonment coincides with 3rd–4th c. CE harbour siltation and Hun disruptions.
