About Pessinus (Ballıhisar)

Chief sanctuary of Cybele (Agdistis) and Galatian Tolistobogii capital, buried temple-city on Gallos/Sangarios tributary. Neolithic through Roman tell sequence with monumental Phrygian terraces, Hellenistic temple of the Mother and Roman imperial cult buildings. Excavated by Ghent (Devreker) 1967–73 and 1987–2008: uncovered colonnaded avenue, theatre, canals and the buried Temple of Cybele on acropolis. Sacred black meteorite (baetyl) venerated here was taken to Rome in 204 BCE. Lower town remains buried under alluvium and modern Ballıhisar.
