About

About Rai Jawa North Canal Hydraulic System

Rock-cut spate canal 1.8 km long, 1.5 m wide, diverting the northern Wadi Rajil tributary flood onto a 12-ha spate field system (bunded plots) 3 km north of Jawa town, linked to the main Jawa reservoir network but operating as an outer field system for barley and wheat. The canal with basalt-slab check dams and cross-bunding evidences the extensive infield–outfield spate agriculture that supported Jawa's proto-urban population beyond immediate reservoir irrigation. Helms mapped 18 bunds; Whitehead 2016 soil geochemistry proved seasonal flood farming.

Why it mattersHinterland spate canal showing Jawa as field-system town not cistern-only, with 12-ha outer irrigation.
