Saint Catherine Monastery (548–565 CE Justinian I) is world's oldest continuously operating Christian monastery at 1585 m foot of Mount Sinai intra Wadi el-Deir. Fortified granite quadrangle 75×60 m with Theotokos basilica (527–565, Justinian, six granite columns 5 m, 6th c mosaics Christ Transfiguration), mosque inside (1100 Fatimid), and library with 2nd-largest early codex collection (3,300 manuscripts, Codex Sinaiticus discovered 1844). UNESCO 2002 Saint Catherine Area 601 km² includes Jabal Musa (2285 m) and Bedouin gardens. Greek Orthodox autonomous.
