Rocky torrent sanctuary of chthonic Great Gods (Kabeiroi/Axiokersos) where Philip II met Olympias and mystery initiation promised salvation at sea. Terraced complex includes Anaktoron, Hieron, Arsenoeion rotunda (largest Greek circular building, 288 BCE), Hall of Votive Gifts where Winged Victory of Samothrace stood on prow above theater, Propylon of Ptolemy II and rock-cut altars spanning 7th c. BCE–300 CE.
Why it mattersOnly large mystery sanctuary after Eleusis; Hellenistic rotunda architecture prototype.
