About
About Tiddis (Castellum Tidditanorum)
Dramatic cliff-hanging Berber-Roman town perched on Guelaa plateau above Rhumel gorge, like a mini Delphi. Built on Numidian hillfort, Romanized under Cirta (Constantine) with no regular grid – streets follow contours, houses stepped. Monumental gate (3rd c), cardo, market, baths, Mithraeum (?) rock-cut sanctuary, Christian basilica, and cistern reservoirs feeding Roman aqueduct fragments. Olive presses everywhere. Known for circular 'megalithic' Bronze Age tombs (bazinas) integrating with Roman walls. Overlooks plain of Constantine; sunset views. Sparsely visited, overgrown.
Why it mattersPure Berber urbanism under Roman rule without orthogonal planning; integrates megaliths and Roman engineering.
