About

About Toricos — Northern Roadstead Anchorage at Gelendzhik

Northern roadstead of Toricos, an open anchorage at 6–9 m depth in Gelendzhik's northern bay with a natural reef delivering 15 mooring cuttings and a scatter of 200+ amphora toes (Bosporan 2nd–4th c. CE) marking bulk grain anchorage before mole use. The reef is a limestone ledge enhanced with small rubble piles to create mooring points analogous to Chersonesos Pesochnaya. Ballast piles (Thasian marble) and a 3rd c. CE wreck (planking under concretion) were recorded 2018 by Novorossiysk hydrography. The roadstead provided holding for 30+ ships awaiting southerly clearance for Kerch Strait, sheltered from northerly bora by Markotkh ridge unlike open Tsemes Bay.

Why it mattersBulk grain roadstead for Bosporan convoys — Bosporan grain route archaeology; wreck provides closed cargo.
