About Berkut-Kala

Kushan–Afrighid desert fortress town (c.100 BCE–800 CE) in the Berkut-Kala oasis on the northern Amu Darya delta near Ellikkala — 8 ha square fortified palace with 2 km wall (Afrighid Khwarazmian) excavated 1937–50 by Sergey Tolstov (Khwarazm Expedition) and later Vadim Yagodin. Berkut-Kala shows Kushan coastal dune hamlet under Khwarazm, then Afrighid rebuilt fortress 400–700 CE with 15 m mudbrick walls, round towers, Zoroastrian fire temple, palace with wall paintings (hunting and banquet) and canal irrigation from Amu Darya. Part of Fifty Fortresses of Khwarazm chain with Toprak, Ayaz, Kyzyl and Koi Krylgan, UNESCO Khwarazm Tentative.
