About
About Kyzyl-Kala (Qyzyl Qala)
Afrighid–Early Islamic desert fortress (c.300 BCE–1200 CE) on the Sultan Uvays piedmont near Ellikkala — compact square fort (90×80 m) with unique corrugated mudbrick façade (vertical ribs) and double walls, excavated by Tolstov and later Rupert Betts with Karakal restoration 2018. Kyzyl-Kala was a small garrison-fort controlling the Toprak-Kala hinterland canal (Guldursun), with parabolic walls and arrow slits, turrets every 12 m, plus a central columned hall with painted plaster. The red mud (kyzyl = red) firing distinguishes it from Berkut, part of the post-Kushan Amu Darya limes.
Why it mattersBest-preserved Khwarazm corrugated fortress — type for Afrighid military architecture; after 2018 restoration the only visitor-accessible 'Fifty Fortresses' fully conserved.
