About Cernavodă Tell — Axioupolis Danube Tell
Cernavodă Tell is a 3 ha Neolithic to Cernavodă I–Hamangia Danube cliff tell excavated by Dimitru Berciu (1950s) and Bulgarian-Romanian teams. Stratotype for Cernavodă I culture (4000–3200 BCE) over Gumelniţa and Hamangia: dark burnished vessels, Mother Goddess figurines, and the buried shaft cemetery with hammer-headed pins. Early EBA Cernavodă II steppe intrusion layer and later Geto-Dacian Axiopolis hillfort and Roman castrum overburden.
Why it mattersEponym for post-Gumelniţa steppe transformation — 4000–3200 BCE rupture between Old Europe and steppe influx.
