About

About Gorgippia — Submerged Harbour Quarter (Anapa Bay)

Gorgippia, 4th c. BCE Sindian harbour renamed for Bosporan governor Gorgippos, under modern Anapa high street and beach; 40 ha excavated grid of stone-paved streets, wine cellars, mosaic floors now overlain by resort but well preserved as Gorgippia Open-Air Museum. Harbour quarter and mole now 1–2.5 m submerged off Anapa beach, with ashlar quay, bollards and anchorage dump of 3rd c. CE amphorae traced by Anapa underwater survey 2010s. Sacked 240 CE by Boranoi pirates, abandoned after.

Why it mattersBest preserved Sindic city plan — paved streets and vineyard presshouses illuminate Sindic-Bosporan hybrid culture; submerged quarter proves 1.2 m Anapa Bay rise since antiquity.
