About
About Toricos — Toretae Harbour South of Gorgippia (Anapa Cape)
Toricos, harbour of the Toretae mentioned by Strabo and Pliny along Sindic coast between Bata and Gorgippia, placed on Anapa Cape's rocky south headland 4 km south of Anapa city. Small ashlar promontory fort with harbour cove now 1–3 m submerged after Anapa Bay cliff slump; underwater scree contains ashlar blocks, pithoi and anchor stocks found by local divers 2012. Attributed to Toretae substrate with Greek import amphorae, predating Gorgippia as Sindic harbour. Excavation limited — surface sherds 5th–2nd c. BCE. Distinct from Gorgippia Anapa central grid.
Why it mattersMissing link in Sindic harbour chain — confirms Strabo's Toretae sequence Bata–Toricos–Gorgippia; scree amphora anchors Sindic vs Maeotian pottery provenance.
