About Matmata — Berber Pit Dwellings
Matmata is the Berber pit-dwelling village 600 m on Djebel Dahar plateau where houses are 6–10 m diameter circular pits 7 m deep dug into limestone with 3–4 excavated rooms around central courtyard open to sky, connected by tunnels. 500+ dwellings (200 inhabited) maintain 20°C inside year-round at 45°C desert. Featured as Lars Homestead in Star Wars Episode IV. 4th c BC? Desert refuge. UNESCO tentative 2020 Habitats troglodytiques. Still 30 Berbers live pits.
