About Qanat Baladeh – Ferdows (Ton) Qanat System
A 35-km double-branch qanat system harvesting the Baladeh karst aquifer at the foot of the Kuh-e Siah range, delivering 45 L/s to Ferdows (ancient Ton) oasis. The mother well shaft is 70 m deep, with 380 vertical access shafts spaced 60–120 m, gradient 1:1500, excavated of alluvial fan gravels and stabilized with kaval (oval hoops). Dated to Sasanian–Early Islamic (500–800 CE) via associated Ferdows citadel ceramics, the system replaced earlier Zoroastrian open-channel hureh. The qanat was active until 1968 Ferdows earthquake, when 15 shafts collapsed; restored 2005–2012 it remains partly functional, illustrating 1,500-year desert oasis sustainability.
